The Port of Beira is situated on the Pungoe river estuary. It is the second largest port in Mozambique with 12 quays.  Beira has always been essentially a transit port, handling the import and export cargoes from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia and other countries in the region.
 

The entrance of the port is 20 nautical miles from the open water along the dredged 60,0 m wide Macuti channel which has buoys and lighting, with a minimum depth below chart datum of 3,3 m. Anchorage for shallow draft vessels is situated at Franquia near the port entrance.

Terminal Information

Multipurpose & Container Terminal

The container terminal was recently rehabilitated consisting of four quays (from Quay 2-5). The port can now handle up to 100 000 TEUs per annum, using two ship-to-shore gantry cranes with 40 ton container handling capacity and 50 ton hook lifting capacity. There is one rail transfer crane with a similar capacity serving a 200 000 square metre, well illuminated, container yard with 74 electric reefer points for refrigerated containers.

From Quay 6 to Quay 10 is the general cargo terminal with the following handling equipment and storage facilities:

  • Electric cranes with capacities from 5 to 20 tons
  • Mobile cranes of 15 tons
  • Caterpillar forklifts of 5 tons
  • Caterpillar forklifts of 3 tons
  • Forklifts of 1,5 tons
  • Bagging machines
  • Vacuvators

Oil Terminal

The new terminal is located on Quay 12 and is well provided with facilities for discharging tankers of 500 to 50 000 dwt and loading of oil tankers of 500 to 2 500 dwt. The system has four pipelines 12" fuel, 16" diesel, 16" jet oil and 16" petrol. The new terminal is working in conjunction with the oil terminal at Berth 11 with a capacity of 400 tons / hour.
